FAQs about By-District Voting

What is changing about how we elect school board members?

Beginning with the November 2026 election, the Acalanes Union High School District (AUHSD) will move from an at-large election system—where all voters in the district could vote for all school board candidates—to a by-trustee area election system.

Why did AUHSD make this change?

This change was made to comply with the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) and to ensure equitable representation for all parts of our community. The process was assisted by a professional demographer and included extensive public input, multiple public hearings, and final review by the Contra Costa County Committee on School District Organization.

Will this change affect which schools my child attends?

No. This transition does not affect school attendance boundaries or how AUHSD operates day-to-day—it only changes how our community elects its school board members.

What does “by-trustee area” mean?

Under this new structure, the district is divided into five trustee areas:

  • Each trustee represents one specific geographic area within the district.

  • Only voters who live within that area will vote for candidates who also reside there.

  • All trustees, regardless of where they live, continue to represent the interests of every student and school across AUHSD.
